The Aware Athlete: Secrets and techniques to Pure Efficiency
“George helped me perceive the artwork of mindfulness. To be neither distracted or centered, inflexible or versatile, passive or aggressive. I realized simply to be.” —Kobe Bryant
Michael Jordan credits George Mumford with transforming his on-court leadership of the Bulls, helping Jordan lead the team to six NBA championships. Mumford also helped Kobe Bryant, Andrew Bynum, and Lamar Odom and countless other NBA players turn around their games. A widely respected public speaker and coach, Mumford is sharing his own story and the strategies that have made these athletes into stars in The Mindful Athlete: The Secret to Pure Performance. His proven, gentle but groundbreaking mindfulness techniques can transform the performance of anyone with a goal, be they an Olympian, weekend warrior, executive, hacker, or artist.
When Michael Jordan left the Chicago Bulls to play baseball in 1993, the team was in crisis. Coach Phil Jackson, a long-time mindfulness practitioner, contacted Dr. Kabat-Zinn to find someone who could teach mindfulness techniques to the struggling team—someone who would have credibility and could speak the language of his players. Kabat-Zinn led Jackson to Mumford and their partnership began. Mumford has worked with Jackson and each of the eleven teams he coached to become NBA champions. His roster of champion clients has since blossomed way beyond basketball to include corporate executives, Olympians, and athletes in many different sports.
With a charismatic teaching style that combines techniques of engaged mindfulness with lessons from popular culture icons such as Yoda, Indiana Jones, and Bruce Lee, Mumford tells illuminating stories about his larger than life clients. His writing is down-to-earth and easy to understand and apply. The Mindful Athlete is an engrossing story and an invaluable resource for anyone looking to elevate their game, no matter what the pursuit, and includes a foreword by Phil Jackson.
“Self-consciousness is if you’re centered on the way you’re doing as an alternative of what you’re doing. We’ve to learn to push and problem ourselves, however not in an insensitive method. Honing your efficiency actually comes all the way down to being comfy with being uncomfortable.”—George Mumford

A must read for everyone!
George Mumford takes a concept that can be off putting to some and makes it something everyone and anyone can relate to. I read this because I am very interested in mindfulness a true believer in its power but sometimes find it hard to explain it to those who are not yet convinced. I heard an interview with Mumford on NPR and decided to order the book. It is short, easy to read and makes mindfulness accessible to anyone and everyone. I have recommended this book to several people already and will be giving it to my 13 year old son who is an avid basketball player. Even if you are not a basketball player or athlete of any kind you will find this book enlightening. In addition to great explanations of how to use mindfulness and incorporate it into your daily habits, Mumford’s advice on life and handling problems will be useful to all.

It is a very good book for the beginner on her/his “mindfulness” journey
It is a very good book for the beginner on her/his “mindfulness” journey. Also, the books Mumford references are good books to read; thus, reading it connects you to other resources. Overall, I loved reading it. It’s easy to read, but gives you a lot to think about.

Great Insights for High Performance in All You Do
The Mindful Athlete isn’t just a book that focuses on athletic performance. It gives a clear understanding of the flow state, where living in the moment at the apex of your skills is truly possible. This is an excellent guide for improving the quality of life and reaching the goals that are personally meaningful.

Fantastic book
This is a great book for all athletes. I bought it to read with my 10 year old son and the humor and tone of the book resonates with him. If you arenât familiar with mindfulness he breaks it down very step by step. He studied with Jon Kabat Zinn (who basically brought mindfulness to the west) so this guys knows what heâs talking about. There are some stories of drug use and addiction but I personally feel comfortable talking to my child about that. He also uses some language, mostly for emphasis and humor. The book has been a great family read. Yes, itâs about mindfulness in sports but itâs really about being mindful in every aspect of our lives. Everyone benefited from it. Highly recommend!

Mr Mumford’s book, The Mindful Athlete is worthy of reference. I continue to go back to it. This is a valuable tome.
I am new to mindfulness and I have been investigating it for just over a year now. As an older athlete I have been in the zone before but, I was not particularly aware of what brought me to it. Recollecting when I ran track and cross-country I experienced the zone a great deal. Mr. Mumford’s book decribes this feeling clearly. This book is very readable and one discerns that a master teacher has written it. From my perspective I have read works by Dr. Zin and T. N. Han. This work resonates with me. I am sure that it will contribute to my practice. I recommend it Highly!

Fantastic with one oops…
I truly enjoyed the book and found it very helpful. I have already read many of the authors he cites throughout the work, but his application of theory to athletic and personal performance was extremely helping me understand what those other authors could not. I was a bit shocked that in Chapter 6 he names the “first two steps of the Twelve Step program…” and then completely ignores step 1 and cites steps 2 and 3. Not a big deal for non-addicts, but makes those of us in recovery question how he could possibly miss the very first, and most important, step. I would recommend this book highly, especially to folks with athletic backgrounds.

Very good for the athlete that is looking to expand beyond just their physical skills. Donât have much bad to say about the book. Was a great introduction for me and my athletics career, exposing me to a whole different approach. George explains that many of us already have the answers within, rather than looking for external results. There is a lot of untapped potential in many athletes and mindfulness can definitely help them get closer to that potential. As a current professional athlete and former division one athlete, I highly recommend.

As an athlete, when I began reading this book I saw the immediate effect. Putting the knowledge that is given by George Mumford to practice has been very beneficial to the mental aspect of my career. I recommend reading this book as it will enable you as an athlete and also a professional to learn how to settle your thoughts and concerns as we all navigate through life.

L’ho trovato molto utile perché mi ha spiegato una meditazione semplice, ma efficace. Il libro collega la meditazione con la performace, non solo con il rilassamento fine a se stesso.
