Turn food from foe to friend with this bestselling guide to developing healthy eating habits through mindfulness practices—from a beloved Zen teacher

Food. It should be one of life’s great pleasures, yet many of us have such a conflicted relationship with it that we miss out on that most basic of satisfactions.  But it is possible—and not really all that difficult—to reclaim the joy of eating, according to Dr. Jan Bays. Mindfulness is the key. Her approach involves bringing one’s full attention to the process of eating—to all the tastes, smells, thoughts, and feelings that arise during a meal. She shows you how to:

• Tune into your body’s own wisdom about what, when, and how much to eat
• Eat less while feeling fully satisfied
• Identify your habits and patterns with food
• Develop a more compassionate attitude toward your struggles with eating
• Discover what you’re really hungry for

Whether you are overweight, suffer from an eating disorder, or just want to get more out of life, this book offers a simple tool that can transform your relationship with food into one of ease and delight.

This new edition, updated throughout, contains a new chapter on how to provide children with a foundation in mindful eating that will serve them well all the rest of their lives. It also includes a link to a 75-minute on-line audio program of mindful eating exercises led by the author.

    This is a fantastic book
I had been struggling with compulsive overeating for years. I worked with a professional and got a lot of help to resolve most of the gross level issues I had with food but I found myself still overeating without meaning to. Luckily it’s not compulsive now, but I still couldn’t “get it” on how to stop simply overeating now that my addiction had fallen away. This book is the answer to that.Jan is a tremendous writer, I like her style a lot. She’s very Zen, which is appropriate given her background in Zen! Very practical, thorough, clear, detailed yet simple….all staples of effective ways to learn a new skill. I’m still working through the book now but it’s really helping things change for me a lot. I’d highly recommend it.

Audio version – Voice is ok, spoken by the author, message is excellent
I am well into the audio CD version of Mindful Eating. The audio is spoken by the author herself, which I always prefer. As others have noted, the author’s voice and cadence is not as captivating as some professional readers, but after a few minutes I am now totally comfortable with it, and enjoying the CDs greatly. The author packs a an excellent mixture of observations, research, personal stories, recommendations, and exercises. Although the author mentions Zen a number of times, I never feel that she is pushing the Buddhist religion at me. Only that the Zen tradition has a lot of wisdom and insight regarding our relationship to food that is worth sharing. I am already applying her methods, and getting good results early on.

A guide to practicing mindful eating
his book applies the concept of mindfulness to eating. The author discusses the nine types of hunger, approaches to slow down and appreciate food, and provides a multitude of exercises to work through to help change your approach to eating. There is an available audio download to aid in performing the exercises. I learned some new techniques and after reading the whole book, I am going back through to work through all of the exercises. While not every technique will work for each person, I think everyone can learn from this book and hopefully gain a better appreciation for food and how to feed the various forms of hunger.

    Extremely informative and easy read
I don’t think I have ever read a “self help” book (if you want to call it that) so easily before. This book is FULL of amazing information with very easy to implement ideas/plans. Definitely something to invest in!

Didn’t like the Voice of the Reader
I never finished listening to this set. Unfortunately, with audio CD’s, the readers’s voice is a dominant factor in keeping the listener engaged. and while the content of this set seemed to be worthwhile, but I, personally, was not able to connect with the reader’s voice and so I quit listening to before I finished the first disc. The reader’s voice emoted with too much of a bland, monochromatic quality to hold my interest. Perhaps, other individuals would not find this to be the case for them.

Really helpful to dig in the hunger feelings
With this book I have a REAL TOOL to understand and question my hunger.I’m at the beginning of the journey of mindful of eating and will update but I can say I learned a lot and it easy enough to follow the instructions

    Fantastic book!
This is the book for those of us who wrestle with eating issues! Finally, a source that explains mindless eating.

    Made me hungry!
Good book re reigning in eating disorder. Thought provoking in teaching one how to look at food in a much different way other than trying to figure out what to eat, when and how. Looking at food in a more “meaningful” way is quite unique. I am applying some of the technique and find that it works pretty well!

This is quite an eye opener and can apply to other areas of being mindful. A lot of this book rang true for me from laughing about what we were told at the dinner table as children, to realizing we are often on auto pilot and don’t pay attention. Highly recommend.

Really brilliant book with a lot of ‘food for thought’. Written by a compassionate and knowledgeable medical doctor and zen Buddhist. I much preferred this to ‘savor’ and other mindful eating books I’ve read. It was a joy to read and I look forward to the meditations on the shambala website. Quite a lot of exercises but they are all short and sweet and apart from a few (such as the raisin exercise) I imagine you can take them or leave them.Provides a lot of compassionate help and advice for weight loss which is partly what I was interested in, without being ‘diety’ or overly prescriptive. As a Buddhist, Bays recommends following the ‘middle way’ – neither being overly strict nor obeying every desire for donuts your mind throws at you.Practical and sensible yet inspiring and spiritual, I heartily recommend this book

beaucoup d’excellents conseils concernant nos habitudes et comment y faire face pour mieux gérer son poids – je suis contente de l’avoir acheté.
